From 19 to 30 May 2008 Germany hosts the 9th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 9). At this meeting, the global community discusses measures against the ongoing destruction of biodiversity as well as ways towards a fair and responsible use of genetic material. Non-Governmental Organisations take a strong interest in the success of this process and have made a number of recommendations to the negotiating parties. This article considers whether the acronym CBD also stands for “Conserving Biological Diversity” in a fair and responsible manner.
